How to Create a Crystal-Clear Vision for Your Future
What if I told you that the roadmap to your full potential is hidden within your own mind?
It doesn't cost money. It’s not a sham. It can't be replicated.
It'll cost you time but everything you do already costs time, so why not spend it on something with a high return.
It's real as the words you're reading right now, not some fancy lingo or pretty words to trick you.
It'll be yours and yours alone. No one else has your map because there is only one map to ever exist, just like you.
All of this clicked for me and now I want to make it clear for you so you can start living a satisfying life. Let's uncover your vision together.
Importance Of A Clear Vision
Here’s a question for you: Is having a clear vision really going to help you in life?
Answer: Absolutely!
Having a vision for your life gives you a reason to get out of bed, to eat food you like and don't like, to work for 4-12 hours a day, and to do whatever else you like.
A vision is the motivation for your actions and the reminder for your disciplines.
The inverse is true. Having no vision will leave you vulnerable to life's chaos. No vision limits your connection with others, leaving you vulnerable to loneliness, depression, and other detrimental emotions.
But what about the middle, having a foggy or vague vision?
This is far more dangerous because it’s much more common. Vague visions only focus on generic, broad goals with little to no action and are easier to give up on. People with a vague vision are content with it because it's the middle ground, better to have than no vision and easier to do than a clear vision.
Vague visions bring short-term happiness at the cost of long-term growth.
Another dangerous aspect of vague visions is they are easier to share and are readily accepted by others.
From families passing down the American Dream here in the US to societies pushing a generic approach to education through colleges and internships. We will continue to see it as people online will sell their vague visions to make a quick buck.
So yes, having a vision will help you to form meaningful actions and a strong discipline for a fulfilling life. A clear vision will help you accomplish these things while helping you reach the next level of your full potential.
Vision: It's Doesn't Have To Be Complicated
So how do we get started?
First, you need to ask, know, & understand why you are doing this.
If you asked yourself:
“Do I love my life?”
“Do I want more out of my career?”
“Am I just living out how others wanted me to?”
“Could I be doing something else more meaningful?”
Then this newsletter is for you.
Now it's all about writing down your answers as specifically as possible to give yourself reasons for doing this.
Another way to put it is drawing the borderlines of your life's map - this map is one you received from your parents, teachers, and other leaders for living out a life they believe is a good life.
This time you will be defining your good life.
This video by Clark Kegley, a life coach and creator of the Metamorphic Coaching program. He gave 4 questions to ask yourself for getting the most out of your life.
“What would I do if I was fearless and could not fail?”
“What would I be most proud of one year from now?”
“What are the 3 things I need to stop doing?”
“What advice would I give someone else in my exact same situation?”
These questions highlight what many purpose questions touch on - goals (Q1), success (Q2), problems (Q3), and solutions (Q4)?
It’s highly encouraged for you to stop reading, grab a piece of paper and pencil, make some coffee, and spend 10 to 30 minutes answering each of the questions.
This is important so you will have the right mentality of why you are doing this.
Go ahead.
This blog post ain’t going anywhere.
You're good?
Congratulations, you now understand why you are looking for a life's goal and how it looks like.
Next step is to go even further on how your life’s mission will look like.
Life Areas: What Does Your X Look Like
No, not your X profile.
Going back to the analogy of the map, there's a big, red X that represents your vision.
But not really.
Instead of a big, red X, to some it's a small, blue x and to others it's a cursive, fuchsia X. All X’s but different for everyone because you are different.
The second thing to clearing your vision is by understanding that a clear vision for your life can't be copied and pasted to your feed. You need to be guided every now and then as you are living out your life.
Side tangent, you may have heard different terms used for the big, red X - North Star, Great Purpose, Life's Mission. They are all similar with very minor differences so you may interchange the name with one you're most comfortable. (Perhaps I'll make a blog post sharing the ones I've used and comparing them.)
Tangent finished, what many life coaches do is give you questions to ask yourself so you can add or erase from your map. The questions asked relate to what you want out of your life.
There are mainly 4 Prime Areas of a person's life:
Body - what is your ideal body type? how do you feel with the body you have now? how does it affect you - negatively or positively?
Mind - how do you handle stress and emotions? would you like to improve your mindset and perspective?
Spirit - where do you currently see yourself in life? do you possess some control or are you struggling to make it? what is it you want to contribute to the world in your lifetime?
Heart - do you see yourself in a relationship? are you in good terms with your family? are you content with the friends you have now and/or would you like to make new ones?
‘And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’
Other areas, like business or finances, weren't included because these 4 Prime Areas are foundational to living, they apply for everyone, and they govern how you approach other areas in life.
These 4 Prime Areas will help illustrate how you want your future life to look like and will follow along your clear vision.
Now that you know the why & how of your vision, it's time to go deeper and to start make your action plan.
Goals: Fine-Tuning Your Map
The goal is the what, the vision is the why, and the project is the how.
Dan Koe is a leading pioneer in productivity and entrepreneurship, inspiring many to pursue the opportunities of the new, digital renaissance.
Much of what has been discussed here, in previous posts, and in future posts can be attributed to his content. This includes his framework on living with a clear vision, which is through goals and projects.
Vision is an abstract concept. It can be fickle at a moment's notice and hard to grasp, much like fog. Goals help to define vision in concrete steps to take and to revise as you accomplish them.
After you answered your 4 questions & written out your ideal 4 Prime Areas, you can now begin writing down the goals to achieve them.
Start with the goals you would like to accomplish in 10 years.
What would you have to do each year following up to the deadline?
How about each quarter of each year?
Be specific and realistic, but not constrained by what's impossible. You'd be surprised how much happens in one year when you put your mind to it.
Now that you have your goals, go deeper with milestones - projects and tasks. This is what all successful people have when they wake up each morning and start the week in.
So look back at your yearly and quarterly goals. Write down the projects you'd have to do weekly and daily. Make it a priority to do them before you do anything else.
My Illustrated Map
It may be easier to some if there's a reference. I'll be sharing what my vision is for building an online venture.
One of my answers to the vision questions included ‘to live a free life,’ to not be stressed out with worry of being let go from a business or to not live in apathy from a mundane life. I wished to live an enriching life helping others while making time for taking care of myself.
Next, how would the 4 Prime Areas look like with this vision in mind.
Body: I’d have a fit body with a balanced diet and a fitness routine to keep me in shape.
Mind: I’d be open minded to different topics - feeding to my polymath nature - and have a strong foundation for creative ideas and persuasive points.
Spirit: I’d be living a life where I can fulfill the duties of my faith, freely serve in church, and become a philanthropist.
Heart: I'd be engaging with my family, reconcile any old wounds, and have a strong group of like-minded friends.
From here, I can see what I'm working towards. Plus, this brings to mind a few role models that fit 2 or 3 of the Prime Areas.
The Spirit and Mind overlap to form my goal of building a successful entrepreneurship, because of the freedom to do what I want and to explore any area I have experience or knowledge of. The Body will help me to enjoy the rewards of this venture and the Heart adds meaning to why I'm in it.
Finally, I have to map out the goals and projects. This is a rough outline I got from my Notion site.
10 Year Goal: 20+ successful products | ideal net worth reached | leading a coaching program and agency | recognized multi-platform brand
5 Years Goal: have a solid process for building products after 7 successful ones | finished improving my credit score and begin going all in on investments | have experience in coaching and begin looking into agency | have a solid process in spreading content throughout chosen platforms
1 Year Goal: build 1 successful product | pay off debts and do dollar-cost averaging on ETF’s | coach at least one individual | focus building an audience in one platform
Quarter Goals: build 1 product | avalanche method and 75-15-10 budget | network & sales | engagement and content leverage
Weekly Projects: write long-form on blog | use sections or Threads/Long Posts (2 times a week) | use paragraphs and ideas for posts (3 times a day) | research other creators and engage with valuable insight | learn frameworks and persuasiveness | avalanche method and 75-15-10 budget
Daily Projects: write ideas, thoughts, or journal entries | curate content | keep track of personal finances
This is an oversimplified look into my vision, areas, and goals for building an entrepreneurship. Some details were left out but the main foundation is here to give you an idea of how it would look.
Conclusion
Congratulations once again for making it to the end. As you go over each section and answer all questions, please remember this is your life's mission.
It can be easy to copy another's life mission as your own but it will be difficult to live by in the long-run.
Take your time in going over everything, fully digest it into your mind, know it can become a reality, and be satisfied it'll be the life you've dreamed of.
The fog is beginning to clear up.
Multiple paths are becoming visible.
You can now see the path to take.
What are you waiting for?
Good tidings to you on your journey forward, blessings!
